SEPTEMBER 5-10, 2017
TUESDAY SEPT 5   We depart this morning on a 'retro' tour brought back by popular request. Traveling south, our first overnight is in Rock Hill, SC. L
WEDNESDAY SEPT 6   We continue our travel to Savannah, GA.  Savannah was colonized in 1733. The city is laid out in grids surrounding beautifully maintained squares. Spared from destruction by Sherman during the civil war, Savannah has many antebellum buildings and 21 of the original Squares. We have a tour of the largest restored National Historic Landmark District in the nation this afternoon. This beautiful city eloquently displays exquisite ironwork, ancient cobblestones, splendid mansions and picturesque cottages. Our hotel is the Holiday Inn Express. A guided tour this afternoon will get us acquainted with the city.  This evening we have dinner at The Wilkes House. In 1943 a young Sema Wilkes took over a boarding house in historic downtown Savannah.  Mrs. Wilkes picked up where the previous owners left off, cultivating relationships with nearby farmers who dug sweet potatoes for her in the fall and shelled whippoorwill peas in the summer.  Her food traditions live on in a wonderful meal.   CD
THURSDAY SEPT 7   This morning we will tour the Mercer-Williams House.  Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer (great-grandfather of the songwriter Johnny Mercer) construction of the house began in 1860.  Interrupted by the Civil War it was finally completed in 1868.  The house was the scene of the shooting death of Jim Williams’ assistant, Danny Hansford.  A story that is retold in the 1994 John Berendt book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”  Lunch will be at the Pirates House.  Since 1753 it has been welcoming visitors with a bounty of delicious food, drink and rousing good times.  A rendezvous for blood-thirsty pirates and sailors, it now is Savannah’s most intriguing restaurant. Free time to explore this afternoon and find the perfect souvenir.    BL
FRIDAY SEPT 8 Travel this morning to Beaufort, SC for some enjoyable time in this unique little city that celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2011. This afternoon we stop at the beautiful Middleton Place plantation. Built in 1755, four generations of the Middleton family and Middleton Place have played an important role in American history. It is a National Historic Landmark and home to America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens. Our overnight is at Holiday Inn Express in Charleston, South Carolina. B

SATURDAY SEPT 9 A guided tour of historic Charleston awaits us this morning. Once a cradle of Southern gentility, Charleston is now one of its last bastions. Charleston epitomizes the gracious air of the Old South, where life moves at the leisurely pace of a stroll along The Battery. Free time to enjoy this lovely city.  We depart this afternoon for our last overnight in Rock Hill, SC. C
SUNDAY SEPT 10   We depart for home this morning with a stop at Tamarack in West Virginia for an included lunch. While here you can look at all the arts and crafts brought in by area craftsmen. A mid-evening arrival home is expected. A truly elegant tour.  CL
